About us

Dr. Juha Mäkelä is CEO and Senior Adviser at Orient Foresight Oy. A retired General Staff Officer and Lieutenant Colonel with a doctorate in Military Sciences, he brings nearly four decades of defence and security expertise to strategy and foresight consulting focused on the Middle East.

Military & academic background

Dr. Mäkelä served 38 years in the Finnish Defence Forces, 34 of them as an officer, with experience in the Army, Navy, and Marines. He is a trained Navy diver. He holds a doctorate from the Finnish National Defence University (FNDU). His thesis examines the role of security elites in Egypt and Jordan after the Arab Spring and their impact on national security, domestic politics, regional order, and alliance-making in the Middle East (2011–2021).

Available for in-person lectures and keynotes on Middle East security, foresight, and regional dynamics.
